Desar

Crafting new realities for
a saturated category.

Desar is a traditional headwear brand (shemagh). Over the years, the shemagh evolved into a fashion statement. That, in addition to locals, big brands like LV and Gucci started designing shemaghs with different patterns. The category was saturated. Plus, the advertising lacked innovation. The headgear was advertised functionally with a shot showcasing the pattern.

To distinguish the brand, Desar approached my agency. The task was challenging because the patterns can only be visible in closeups. Additionally, the brand’s marketing department didn’t believe in hiring celebrities to lend their fame to the brand—and subsequently the products. The brand wanted to create its unique visual language.

Role: Concept, Art Direction, 3D Design, Design.

Personae Logos

Our idea was to create a unique persona for each pattern along with a unique story. Then craft unique artworks that reflect these personae.

We created six personae: Gutra “Plain”, Moktalif “Different”, Shababi “Youth”, Abiad “White”, Cheyokh “Sheikhs”, and Classicky “Classic”. The essence of each persona was captured by a logo crafted with Arabic typography—emphasizing the authenticity of the brand.

Then through a combination of model photography and 3D environments, I created an artwork for each persona. Each artwork captured the essence of these personae uniquely. The 3D sets are inspired fro architectural elements fused with Arabic typography.

Making off:

We partnered with renowned fashion-photographer Peter Richweisz to shoot the project. After I created the set in 3D, Peter implemented the same 3D setup (lighting, camera lens, camera height) when photographing the models. That resulted in perfectly matching shots of the models with the created environments. Then, with a bit of colour-grading and retouching, we created a unique look for each persona, and subsequently, creating a new way to advertise a brand.
